    Monte Carlo studies of antiferromagnetic spin models in three dimensions

We discuss about the vacua properties and analyze the phase transitions.     Universality of the Crossing Probability for the Potts Model for q=1,2,3,4

    The universality of the crossing probability πhs\pi_{hs} of a system to percolate only in the horizontal direction, was investigated numerically by using a cluster Monte-Carlo algorithm for the qq-state Potts model for q=2,3,4q=2,3,4 and for percolation q=1q=1. We check the percolation through Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters near the critical point on the square lattice by using representation of the Potts model as the correlated site-bond percolation model. It was shown that probability of a system to percolate only in the horizontal direction πhs\pi_{hs} has universal form πhs=A(q)Q(z)\pi_{hs}=A(q) Q(z) for q=1,2,3,4q=1,2,3,4 as a function of the scaling variable z=[b(q)L1Îœ(q)(p−pc(q,L))]ζ(q)z= [ b(q)L^{\frac{1}{\nu(q)}}(p-p_{c}(q,L)) ]^{\zeta(q)}. Here, p=1−exp⁥(−ÎČ)p=1-\exp(-\beta) is the probability of a bond to be closed, A(q)A(q) is the nonuniversal crossing amplitude, b(q)b(q) is the nonuniversal metric factor, ζ(q)\zeta(q) is the nonuniversal scaling index, Îœ(q)\nu(q) is the correlation length index.     R-mode oscillations of differentially and rapidly rotating Newtonian polytropic stars

    For the analysis of the r-mode oscillation of hot young neutron stars, it is necessary to consider the effect of it differential rotation, because viscosity is not strong enough for differentially rotating young neutron stars to be lead to uniformly rotating configurations on a very short time scale after their birth. In this paper, we have developed a numerical scheme to solve r-mode oscillations of differentially rotating polytropic inviscid stars. This is the extended version of the method which was applied to compute r-mode oscillations of uniformly rotating Newtonian polytropic stars. By using this new method, we have succeeded in obtaining eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of r-mode oscillations of differentially rotating polytropic stars. Our numerical results show that as the degree of differential rotation is increased, it becomes more difficult to solve r-mode oscillations for slightly deformed configurations from sphere compared to solving r-mode oscillations of considerably deformed stars. One reason for it seems that for slightly deformed stars corotation points appear near the surface region if the degree of differential rotation is strong enough. This is similar to the situation that the perturbational approach of r-mode oscillations for it slowly rotating stars in general relativity results in a singular eigenvalue problem.Comment: including 7 figures. submitted to PR

    Logarithmic Corrections in the 2D XY Model

    Using two sets of high-precision Monte Carlo data for the two-dimensional XY model in the Villain formulation on square L×LL \times L lattices, the scaling behavior of the susceptibility χ\chi and correlation length Ο\xi at the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition is analyzed with emphasis on multiplicative logarithmic corrections (lnL)−2r(ln L)^{-2r} in the finite-size scaling region and (lnΟ)−2r(ln \xi)^{-2r} in the high-temperature phase near criticality, respectively. By analyzing the susceptibility at criticality on lattices of size up to 5122512^2 we obtain r=−0.0270(10)r = -0.0270(10), in agreement with recent work of Kenna and Irving on the the finite-size scaling of Lee-Yang zeros in the cosine formulation of the XY model. By studying susceptibilities and correlation lengths up to Ο≈140\xi \approx 140 in the high-temperature phase, however, we arrive at quite a different estimate of r=0.0560(17)r = 0.0560(17), which is in good agreement with recent analyses of thermodynamic Monte Carlo data and high-temperature series expansions of the cosine formulation.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX + 8 postscript figures.     Shared Care, Elder and Family Member Skills Used to Manage Burden

    Aim. The aim of this paper is to further develop the construct of Shared Care by comparing and contrasting it to related research, and to show how the construct can be used to guide research and practice. Background. While researchers have identified negative outcomes for family caregivers caused by providing care, less is known about positive aspects of family care for both members of a family dyad. Understanding family care relationships is important to nurses because family participation in the care of chronically ill elders is necessary to achieve optimal outcomes from nursing interventions. A previous naturalistic inquiry identified a new construct, Shared Care, which was used to describe a family care interaction that contributed to positive care outcomes. Methods. A literature review was carried out using the databases Medline, CINAHL, and Psych-info and the keywords home care, care receiver, disability, family, communication, decision-making and reciprocity. The results of the review were integrated to suggest how Shared Care could be used to study care difficulties and guide interventions. Results. The literature confirmed the importance of dyad relationships in family care. Shared Care extended previous conceptualizations of family care by capturing three critical components: communication, decision-making, and reciprocity. Shared Care provides a structure to expand the conceptualization of family care to include both members of a care dyad and account for positive and negative aspects of care. Conclusions. The extended view provided by the construct of Shared Care offers practitioners and scholars tools to use in the context of our ageing population to improve the effectiveness of family care relationships

    Reexamination of the long-range Potts model: a multicanonical approach

    We investigate the critical behavior of the one-dimensional q-state Potts model with long-range (LR) interaction 1/rd+σ1/r^{d+\sigma}, using a multicanonical algorithm. The recursion scheme initially proposed by Berg is improved so as to make it suitable for a large class of LR models with unequally spaced energy levels. The choice of an efficient predictor and a reliable convergence criterion is discussed. We obtain transition temperatures in the first-order regime which are in far better agreement with mean-field predictions than in previous Monte Carlo studies. By relying on the location of spinodal points and resorting to scaling arguments, we determine the threshold value σc(q)\sigma_c(q) separating the first- and second-order regimes to two-digit precision within the range 3≀q≀93 \leq q \leq 9.     Early Life Characteristics and Neurodevelopmental Phenotypes in the Mount Sinai Children’s Environmental Health Center

    Neurodevelopmental outcomes including behavior, executive functioning, and IQ exhibit complex correlational structures, although they are often treated as independent in etiologic studies. We performed a principal components analysis of the behavioral assessment system for children, the behavior rating inventory of executive functioning, and the Wechsler scales of intelligence in a prospective birth cohort, and estimated associations with early life characteristics. We identified seven factors: (1) impulsivity and externalizing, (2) executive functioning, (3) internalizing, (4) perceptual reasoning, (5) adaptability, (6) processing speed, and (7) verbal intelligence. Prenatal fish consumption, maternal education, preterm birth, and the home environment were important predictors of various neurodevelopmental factors. Although maternal smoking was associated with more adverse externalizing, executive functioning, and adaptive composite scores in our sample, of the orthogonally-rotated factors, smoking was only associated with the impulsivity and externalizing factor (ÎČ^ − 0.82, 95% CI − 1.42, − 0.23). These differences may be due to correlations among outcomes that were accounted for by using a phenotypic approach. Dimension reduction may improve upon traditional approaches by accounting for correlations among neurodevelopmental traits

    Evidence for softening of first-order transition in 3D by quenched disorder

    We study by extensive Monte Carlo simulations the effect of random bond dilution on the phase transition of the three-dimensional 4-state Potts model which is known to exhibit a strong first-order transition in the pure case. The phase diagram in the dilution-temperature plane is determined from the peaks of the susceptibility for sufficiently large system sizes. In the strongly disordered regime, numerical evidence for softening to a second-order transition induced by randomness is given. Here a large-scale finite-size scaling analysis, made difficult due to strong crossover effects presumably caused by the percolation fixed point, is performed.Comment: LaTeX file with Revtex, 4 pages, 4 eps figure

    Assessment of panobacumab as adjunctive immunotherapy for the treatment of nosocomial Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia.

    The fully human anti-lipopolysaccharide (LPS) immunoglobulin M (IgM) monoclonal antibody panobacumab was developed as an adjunctive immunotherapy for the treatment of O11 serotype Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. We evaluated the potential clinical efficacy of panobacumab in the treatment of nosocomial pneumonia. We performed a post-hoc analysis of a multicenter phase IIa trial (NCT00851435) designed to prospectively evaluate the safety and pharmacokinetics of panobacumab. Patients treated with panobacumab (n = 17), including 13 patients receiving the full treatment (three doses of 1.2 mg/kg), were compared to 14 patients who did not receive the antibody. Overall, the 17 patients receiving panobacumab were more ill. They were an average of 72 years old [interquartile range (IQR): 64-79] versus an average of 50 years old (IQR: 30-73) (p = 0.024) and had Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) scores of 17 (IQR: 16-22) versus 15 (IQR: 10-19) (p = 0.043). Adjunctive immunotherapy resulted in an improved clinical outcome in the group receiving the full three-course panobacumab treatment, with a resolution rate of 85 % (11/13) versus 64 % (9/14) (p = 0.048). The Kaplan-Meier survival curve showed a statistically significantly shorter time to clinical resolution in this group of patients (8.0 [IQR: 7.0-11.5] versus 18.5 [IQR: 8-30] days in those who did not receive the antibody; p = 0.004). Panobacumab adjunctive immunotherapy may improve clinical outcome in a shorter time if patients receive the full treatment (three doses). These preliminary results suggest that passive immunotherapy targeting LPS may be a complementary strategy for the treatment of nosocomial O11 P. aeruginosa pneumonia
